House of Representatives Passes the Fair Chance Act in Landslide Bipartisan 377-48 Vote, Honoring the Legacy of Congressman Elijah Cummings
Justice Action Network Federal Legislative and Policy Director Inimai Chettiar released the following statement applauding passage of the Fair Chance Act as part of the NDAA today, and urging swift action in the Senate.
“The Fair Chance Act represents the legacy of civil rights icon Congressman Elijah Cummings and his willingness to put people above partisanship to reform our broken justice system. We are encouraged to see the House pass one of the final bills sponsored by this American hero in a landslide bipartisan 377-48 vote, as thousands of returning citizens seek jobs.
Chettiar continued, “The Fair Chance Act represents a rare moment of bipartisan cooperation in Washington where members from both sides of the aisle stepped over party lines to offer second chances and improve public safety. It was notable that Chairman Cummings chose a committed conservative in Congressman Doug Collins to co-sponsor his legislation. These two men, who did not agree on much, were in lockstep on breaking down barriers to the formerly incarcerated so they could have successful path back to their communities.”
“As we mark the one year anniversary of the First Step Act, there is no better way to honor American hero and civil rights warrior Congressman Elijah Cummings than for the Senate to take up his bill, and make the Fair Chance Act the law.”
