In New York Daily News Op-Ed, Inimai Chettiar of Justice Action Network and Hilary Shelton of NAACP urge Congress and the White House to seize on unprecedented public support and pass criminal and racial justice reform
(Washington, DC) – After an unprecedented focus on criminal justice reform at both the Democratic and Republican conventions, Inimai Chettiar, Federal Director of the Justice Action Network, and Hilary Shelton, the NAACP’s Washington Bureau Director and Senior Vice President for Policy and Advocacy, penned an op-ed in the New York Daily News calling on federal lawmakers to seize this moment and pass criminal and racial justice reforms in any negotiated legislation. To date, despite bipartisan support for key measures, advocates have received no assurances that bipartisan criminal justice reforms will pass this year.
“We know that criminal and racial justice reforms are popular among voters. We know they have bipartisan support. And, we know that both conventions focused on the topic. Now, we need action. Congressional leaders must find a vehicle to move these important reforms and address our bloated, costly, and unjust prison system,” said Inimai Chettiar.
