Justice Action Network Congratulates Associate Attorney General on Bipartisan Confirmation Vote

(Washington, D.C.) -- Today, the United States Senate voted to confirm Vanita Gupta as Associate Attorney General of the United States. Previously, Gupta served as the President and CEO of the Leadership Conference for Civil and Human Rights, an original member of the bipartisan coalition working to reform America’s broken justice system. Holly Harris, President and Executive Director of Justice Action Network, the largest bipartisan criminal justice reform organization in the country, issued the following statement:

“We are so proud of our friend and colleague, Vanita Gupta, the new Associate Attorney General of the United States. The bipartisan group of Senators who voted in favor of her confirmation, including the courageous Sen. Lisa Murkowski, will be proud of their vote, and are on the right side of history,” said Holly Harris, President and Executive Director of Justice Action Network. “Associate AG Gupta has a long career of building bridges and working with a broad coalition of voices, especially on bipartisan solutions to help the most disadvantaged among us. She can now continue that critical work in the highest level of government.

“I was honored to be a part of the positive, bipartisan movement to confirm Associate AG Gupta, and I am so grateful to the law enforcement officers, and conservative and progressive leaders who stepped up to support this confirmation. I want to congratulate our bipartisan criminal justice reform champion, Chairman Dick Durbin, for shepherding this successful bipartisan vote. And it must be said that the moment of bipartisan cooperation on the Senate floor between Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, who delivered the speech of a lifetime in support of Associate AG Gupta, and Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who spoke so passionately of the needs of her constituents, is exactly what America needs in this moment” continued Harris. “I look forward to an unprecedented period of bipartisan cooperation under my friend Vanita’s leadership. In the words of Sen. Cory Booker, ‘She is not a partisan, she’s a patriot.’”
