JUSTICE ACTION NETWORK REACTION TO SENATOR MIKE BRAUN’S POLICING BILL

As Scott Bill Remains in Limbo, Justice Action Network Applauds Senator Braun for Boldly Stepping Up to Introduce Transformative Qualified Immunity Reforms

(Washington, DC) - Please credit the following statement to Holly Harris, President and Executive Director of Justice Action Network, the country’s largest organization dedicated to advancing bipartisan criminal justice reform at the federal and state levels:

“In this critical moment in our country’s history, we needed a leader willing to step forward and tear down the partisan wall that is stifling good-faith efforts at real policing reform. With this aggressive legislation, Sen. Mike Braun, the junior senator from Indiana, appears to be that leader.

Sen. Braun gets right to the heart of the racial tensions in this country by attempting to reform qualified immunity, the mechanism that, for far too long, has shielded government agents who commit civil rights violations from any accountability in a court of law.

We applaud Sen. Braun for stepping out of the Beltway and into the streets of our greatest urban centers and rural counties, and truly meeting the moment with this groundbreaking legislation. History will smile on Sen. Braun’s courage of conviction, and we hope his colleagues on both sides of the aisle will feel inspired to join good-faith negotiations on landmark bipartisan reforms that can begin to heal our broken nation.”
