Penn Live: Pa. doesn't need to reinstate mandatory minimum sentences: H. William DeWeese and Angus Love

Corrections Secretary John Wetzel, an opponent of the Stephens bill, noted that "as the rest of the country moves away from mandatory minimums for drug offenses, the state House plans to reintroduce them.

"Research indicates no public safety enhancement but a potential price tag of 85M. Hopefully data and research will start driving CJ policy/legislation in Pennsylvania," Wetzel observed.

Recent polling data by the Republican-leaning Public Opinion Strategies on behalf of the nonpartisan US Justice Action Network says that eighty percent or more of Pennsylvanians approve of returning sentencing discretion to judges and abandoning mandatory sentences.
