The Crime Report: Biden Slammed Over Failure to Extend COVID Home Confinement
President Joe Biden, who promised to reduce mass incarceration, has come under fire from critics complaining about his failure to announce an extension to the home confinement program that began as part of the CARES Act during the Coronavirus pandemic, reports The Hill. The American Civil Liberties Union stated in a press release on Monday that, in conjunction with Families Against Mandatory Minimums and the Justice Action Network, they are calling on Biden to use his clemency powers to prevent these over 4,000 people from returning to prison. This comes as a result of a memo issued by the Trump Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel that stated people chosen by prison officials to be transferred to home confinement under the CARES Act are to be returned to prison once the pandemic ends.
“This is not a heavy lift for the Biden administration. All these people were moved out of prison because Trump officials felt it safe enough for them to go home,” Justice Action Network President and Executive Director Holly Harris said. “What more political cover does President Biden possibly need? Lawmakers and advocates from both sides of the aisle agree: it’s time for President Biden to grant clemency to these men and women so they can fully connect with their families, secure jobs, and move on with their lives. Anything less is unconscionable.”
