The Fair Chance Act Headed to President Trump's Desk After Senate Passes NDAA in Bipartisan 86-8 Vote; Bill is Tribute to Late Chairman Cummings

One Year After the First Step Act Was Signed into Law, Bipartisan Criminal Justice Reform Continues

Justice Action Network President & Executive Director Holly Harris released the following statement applauding the Senate for passing the Fair Chance Act in today’s bipartisan NDAA vote:

“Today is a significant step forward for millions of Americans struggling with the stigma of a criminal record,” said Justice Action Network Executive Director Holly Harris. “Thanks to bipartisan efforts of Sen. Ron Johnson, Sen. Cory Booker, Rep. Doug Collins, and the late Chairman Elijah Cummings, one more barrier to jobs is torn down, making our economy stronger and our communities safer.

“We look forward to President Trump signing the Fair Chance Act into law, and opening federal government service to millions of Americans who have made mistakes, but just need a fair chance to turn their lives around.

“But even with this historic vote, our work is far from over. As we mark the first anniversary of the First Step Act, we urge Congress to ensure proper implementation of that landmark legislation, and fund prison reforms with the full $75 million called for in the bill. In this turbulent political environment, we continue to be grateful for the steadfast leadership of Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Rep. Doug Collins, Sen. Chuck Grassley, and Sen. Dick Durbin and their willingness to reach across the aisle to make our justice system fairer and more effective.”
