WITH CONGRESS ON THE VERGE OF HISTORIC POLICING REFORM LEGISLATION, JUSTICE ACTION NETWORK URGES BOTH SIDES TO CLOSE THE DEAL

JAN’s Holly Harris: “We urge both sides to redouble their efforts, open their hearts and minds, and finalize this groundbreaking policing reform legislation as soon as possible.”

(Washington, D.C.)—Today, Congressional aides working on bipartisan policing reform legislation were reported to have reached consensus on three major issues: military equipment, no-knock warrants, and the use of chokeholds. Negotiations continued on prosecution and liability of individual law enforcement officers. In response, Holly Harris, President and Executive Director of Justice Action Network, issued the following statement:

“We are heartened to see the incredible progress made on a bipartisan policing reform deal, and we are grateful to the lawmakers at the table putting partisanship aside in the best interest of justice for all communities. Just over two years ago, even as we were passing bipartisan prison and sentencing reform, this level of consensus on policing legislation was unthinkable. Today, Congress is again on the verge of an historic bipartisan deal, and we urge both sides to redouble their efforts, open their hearts and minds, and finalize this groundbreaking policing reform legislation as soon as possible.”
