FOX 17: TN House passes drug free school zone, mandatory minimums reform

The Tennessee State House passed a House Bill 2517, a critical overhaul of drug free school zone laws that reduces the size of drug free school zones from 1,000 to 500 feet and grants judges more discretion in sentencing.

The legislation, which was overwhelmingly voted, 88-4, aims to shift Tennessee away from mandatory minimum sentences, while also saving millions in taxpayer dollars by reducing incarceration, according to a Justice Action Network press release.

The bipartisan bill is sponsored by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Michael Curcio (R-69); the Senate companion bill (Senate Bill 2734), sponsored by Senate Judiciary Chairman Mike Bell (R-9).
