Justice Action Network Calls on Legislators of Both Parties to Work Together to Pass Bold, Bipartisan Policing Reforms

(Washington, DC) - “It is a historic moment when both the Republican-led Senate and the Democratic-led House have solid proposals to address policing reform in America,” said Holly Harris, President and Executive Director of Justice Action Network. “Sen. Tim Scott’s Justice Act is another strong step forward, and we commend him and all the bill’s sponsors for stepping up and meeting the moment.

Ms. Harris continued, “Now the challenging work begins to find bipartisan consensus, and the good news is that there are already significant areas of agreement between the Senate and House bills, such as the formation of a police misconduct registry, improved de-escalation training, and the encouragement of greater use of body cameras. We urge House and Senate leaders to look beyond partisan politics and work together to heal the wounds of impacted communities. They did it two years ago with sentencing and prison reforms in the First Step Act, and with support from many of the same voices from the far right to the far left, we are confident they can do it again. We stand at the ready to support Sen. Scott and his colleagues across the aisle like Sens. Booker and Harris in their efforts to find common ground and pass bold, bipartisan legislation on the floor of the United States Senate.”
